Drums quotes and practice, an article that wants to enrich our music pages and at the same time wants to promote this instrument and its magical players.

Drums are indeed one of the oldest musical instruments, with evidence of their use dating back as far as 6000 BC. Archaeological findings, particularly from Mesopotamia and China, suggest the early use of drums made from materials like animal skins and hollowed-out tree trunks. Their versatility extended beyond music, playing roles in communication, religious rituals, and even coordinating communal activities. Early drums were crafted from readily available natural materials. The oldest drum to be discovered is the Alligator Drum, which is said to have manifested shamanistic characteristics and was often used in ritual ceremonies, alligator skin was used in China around 5500 BC, and other drums were made from animal hides stretched over hollowed-out tree trunks.

The use of drums wasn’t limited to musical expression. They were also vital in communication, religious ceremonies, and social gatherings in various ancient cultures. The heartbeat of music lies in its rhythm, and at its core are the drummers – the unsung heroes who transform mere melodies into electrifying masterpieces. From thunderous rock anthems to soul-stirring jazz grooves, the best drummers in history have left an indelible mark on the world of music, shaping the genres we love and inspiring generations of musicians. But who among these rhythm wizards truly stands out as the best of all time?

The drum’s fundamental sound and adaptability have ensured its prominent place in musical traditions across the world. Drums, in their diverse forms and sounds, have inspired countless quotes about their power, their challenge, and their role in music and life. Musicians and enthusiasts alike have often reflected on the unique qualities of drumming, from its primal energy to its ability to connect with audiences on a visceral level. Over time, drums have evolved in design and construction, with variations in size, shape, and the materials used for the drumhead and shell.

Drumming Is known to be one of the best forms of exercise as it burns more calories in a half hour session than cycling, weight lifting, and hiking. In fact, it has even been adapted into an actual workout called Drums Alive which involves aerobic dancing and jamming on exercise balls. Recreational drum playing is also lowers the amount of stress hormones in our body.

The modern drum kit was formed during the 1930s – before that, musical bands used more than one person to control the drums in orchestras. The average drum kit has 5 pieces – the bass drum, snare drum, two toms, and a floor tom, as well as several cymbals; crash, hi-hat, and ride. The world’s largest drum kit has 813 pieces and took 36 years to build. It was created by Dr. Mark Temperato who is working on expanding it to 1000 pieces!

The Ludwig Drum Company, a popular American drum manufacturer, became known for its first product back in 1909 – the first ever workable bass drum foot pedal system, which paved the way for what was eventually to become the modern drum set as we know it. The first electronic drum was created by Graeme Edge, drummer of The Moody Blues, back in the early 1970s. They became widely popular in the 80s, and people even thought that they would phase out the traditional drums. It turns out, however, that drummers still preferred to play acoustic kits over electric ones.

The drums are the most crucial part of the rhythm section in any band, and they require plenty of skills including limb independence, hand-eye coordination, and a good sense of rhythm. If you love the drums and are interested in learning to play them, consider taking drum lessons with Kristina Rybalchenko one of the best female drummers ever, now based in Los Angeles, but very active on the Internet.

My definition of hip hop is taking elements from many other spheres of music to make hip hop. Whether it be breakbeat, whether it be the groove and grunt of James Brown or the pickle-pop sounds of Kraftwerk or Yellow Magic Orchestra, hip hop is also part of what they call hip-house now, or trip hop, or even parts of drum n’ bass.
Afrika Bambaataa

Music is like a conversation. One person says one thing that speaks with a harmonica, with a bass, with a drum. They’re all conversating, and we’re just trying to find a way to make conversation rather than blah, blah, blah. But it’s not really so hard a thing to do if you know the way to approach it.
Stephen Marley

To the solemn graves, near a lonely cemetery, my heart like a muffled drum is beating funeral marches.
Charles Baudelaire

I don’t have perfect pitch. My drums sound like a drummer, not a drum machine.
Taylor Hawkins

I never use a piano stool. I always use a drum stool. Because I feel that when you’re down there, you’re playing in that way you’re supposed to. I like to be above it.
Jamie Cullum

A lot of the time, I will write a guitar riff first. I don’t write drum riffs first.

LEARN THIS! 5 Tracks You Need to Know as a Beginner Drummer by Kristina Rybalchenko

I have a drum set in my dressing room. I play drums to relax and have some fun.
Queen Latifah

When I was young, I had one of those Yamaha drum machines, and I used to practice to that quite a bit, just to practice soloing and being in time and completing all my phrases.
John Otto

If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery

You know the drum was the first instrument besides the human voice.
Billy Higgins

Portishead’s production is just insane beats you would expect to be on a KRS-One album. But then there’s this little white girl with an angel voice singing over it. It was a cool juxtaposition. I like ‘It’s A Fire.’ That’s a chill song with kind of a military drum thing going on, like a drummer boy.
Anders Holm

Josh is the guy in the band who’s just so friendly and super, wanting to walk up to you and say, ‘Hey, I’m Josh. I drum in this band, and I’m a big fan of you, and I really appreciate what you do.’ Josh has all these great friends in the industry now.
Tyler Joseph

I’m inspired by anyone who’s honest in their own expression, people who truly beat to the rhythm of their own drum.
Gillian Zinser

One that really caught me was Joe Morello. He was the first drummer I ever saw that could do a roll with one hand. He would turn his hand over and use his fingertips to get the stick bouncing. He could sit there with his right hand doing stuff on the cymbals and tom-toms while he was doing a roll with his left on the snare drum.
Butch Trucks

I can’t tell you how many things I’ve worked on where I sat on it for a few years, and then somebody else did something very similar. Whether it’s some weird vocal effect you hear on another record, or a drum beat, or even a song title, a subject matter, or a mixture of different kinds of music.
Beck

Without Metallica, I wouldn’t be doing what I am doing. I have every Metallica record, of course, and I would spend hours on drums in my parents’ basement with the stereo behind me, cranking those records and learning Lars’ drum beats, beat by beat.
Joey Jordison

There’s no doubt that prog rock has an image problem: many musicians hate the label, and too many people associate it with 10-minute drum solos and the weirder bits of JRR Tolkien.
Gavin Esler

In all the music that deals with experimental repetition, drum and bass, dub, various kinds of house music, there’s always been a quality of atmosphere and ambience.
Bill Laswell

There’s not a whole lot to do in Athens. When I was 13, I just started entertaining myself by writing songs. I’d sit in my room for 10 hours playing the same song, stacking vocals, trying out different drum beats, realizing no one would ever hear this but having so much fun. I guess I got my voice from just doing that so often.
Brittany Howard

If you’ve got a problem, take it out on a drum.
Neil Peart

If you’ve got a problem, take it out on a drum.
Neil PeartI go out of my way to help people, but I don’t tell people. Goodness is not about beating your own drum.
Badshah

I love pop music. I love drum and bass, Calvin Harris, all these electronic things, but it’s nice to have something organic as well.
Gabrielle Aplin

The thing I find frustrating about rock music is, how different can you make an acoustic drum kit sound, an electric guitar and vocals?
Flume

I try to keep my ear to the streets without sacrificing who I am as an artist. If a song needs a drum machine I’ll use a drum machine. If it needs a drummer, I’ll use a real drummer.

Fall Out Boy – Sugar, We’re Goin Down – 2005 – Drum Cover by Kristina Rybalchenko

A great drum record has to sound good; in fact, it should sound special. It should capture the richness and the actual tones of the drums themselves, regardless of who is playing.
Joey Jordison

When you’re going for a joke, you’re stuck out there if it doesn’t work. There’s nowhere to go. You’ve done the drum role and the cymbal clash and you’re out on the end of the plank.
Bob Newhart

I play a percussion instrument, not a musical saw; it needs no amplification. Where it’s needed, they put a microphone in front of the bass drum. But, I don’t think it’s necessary to play that way every night.
Buddy Rich

Some records with drum machines on them sound phony and plastic. It all depends on how you use the tools.
Don Henley

For the second album, ‘Discovery,’ when we had to think about doing a live show I think we were not happy with the way it would look like and sound like. We were not happy coming onstage with just two or three samplers and a few drum machines, you know?
Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo

It’s been years and years and years I’ve been playing the drums, and they’re still a challenge. I still enjoy using drumsticks and a snare drum.
Charlie Watts

Don’t quit. Never give up trying to build the world you can see, even if others can’t see it. Listen to your drum and your drum only. It’s the one that makes the sweetest sound.
Simon Sinek

I was one of six children, brought up by my mother in Swindon after my father died. We had all we needed – food on the table, clothes to wear. When I wanted a drum kit, my mother got me one. When I got into playing guitar, I came down one Christmas or birthday and there was a guitar for me. It amazes me how Mum managed to do it.
Gilbert O’Sullivan

The drum records that I like are ones on which the drumming didn’t repeat itself. The players didn’t stick to a format or formula.
Joey Jordison

I love the percussion. It’s a right brain, left brain thing. There are different beats, but cooperating together. It’s your whole body doing it, you’re doing the snare drum and the high top with your hands and the bass drum with your foot. You’re this whole motion machine.
Shalom Harlow

With ‘Under the Pressure,’ I just found two chords I liked, and built it up, did like a ten-minute drum pattern.
Adam Granduciel

Mad World’s distinctive percussion intro was played on a Roland CR-78 drum machine. We first recorded it at twice the speed, but it sounded great slowed down.
Curt Smith

An uncle gave me a side drum and my mother decided I should have lessons.
Humphrey Lyttelton

Go-go is so drum and Congo based. It’s almost like music from Africa. The drums like on ‘Planet Paradise’ are deeply African-rooted. It’s really bouncy and the same speed as go-go music. That’s an example of the influence go-go had on me.
Goldlink

I don’t like straightforward drum sounds and hate snares; can’t stand them.
Oneohtrix Point Never

I really just wanted to play the drum set and match that. I was never really into the percussion thing.
John Otto

Nowadays I get complaints about long drum solos, but in those days they wanted me to keep on going so they could go over to the bar and have a drink.
Aynsley Dunbar

I’d be very honored to be the ambassador to drum solos.
Neil Peart

I can think of a lot better things to do with my hands than to cut them up on the rim of a drum. Share this Quote
Buddy Rich

Somebody gave me this drum machine and somebody else asked me to program something for a project. I really liked programming and I was really interested in using the drum machine. Share this Quote

Black holes can bang against space-time as mallets on a drum and have a very characteristic song.
Janna Levin

I never pursued Hollywood banging my drum, because I was never in a film big enough to do that.
Armand Assante

Meeting Mel Brooks was like talking to a drum kit. He talks in rhythm – it’s like ‘Ba-ba-da, ba-ba-daaa, whoossssh.’ ‘Endgame’ is like a musical as well, with all those pauses and different rhythms.
Lee Evans

Part of Steve’s job was to drum into us how important what we were doing actually would be to the world.
Andy Hertzfeld

Come to think of it, the way I play is like a drum machine- very mechanical.
Ikue Mori

It’s interesting. I’ve known quite a few good athletes that can’t begin to play a beat on the drum set. Most team sport is about the smooth fluidity of hand-eye coordination and physical grace, where drumming is much more about splitting all those things up.
Neil Peart

Every film for every actor is a make-or-break film. I believe every film has the power to break you or make you. So, an actor will treat every film like his last film. That’s the way we need to work, and that’s the way you can drum up that passion needed to do good work.
Abhishek Bachchan

My version of a stress dream is, really, showing up on a concert stage with a drum set and not knowing the chart.
Damien Chazelle

When I was a kid, of course I wanted to be the fastest, the loudest and the one with the biggest drum set, but obviously my aspirations have changed a bit since then.
Taylor Hawkins

The heart jungle drum beat finds its voice in love and matchsticks.
Isabel Yosito

I’ve always been drawn to people who dance to the beat of a different drum; it didn’t matter if they were in film or music or fashion.
RuPaul

The sound system influence is undeniable in hip-hop, in jungle, drum and bass, now EDM.
Walshy Fire

If I get married again, I want a guy there with a drum to do rimshots during the vows.
Sam Kinison

I love the way Pharell is laying down great drum tracks. He is a great drummer.
Matt Cameron

My favorite instrument is the snare drum. In Scotland, the snare drum is very prominent in Highland bands. The Scottish style of playing is in my blood. It’s a very powerful instrument, but it can also be soothing, like velvet. It’s a real challenge for composers.
Evelyn Glennie

Everyone knows deep in their hearts that the drums are the coolest instrument, and that a band is only as good as its drummer. So I’m all for drum solos. I’m all for drummers hamming it up. I’m all for drummers standing up and kicking over the kit.
Fred Armisen
